Driveway & Cut Retaining Walls

Walls holding a driveway cut, designed for vehicle load rather than for a garden bank.

A paved driveway surface on a slope

Getting a vehicle from the street to a house on a sloping block usually means cutting into the slope, and that cut has to be held. On the steeper blocks around the western foothills it is often the largest single piece of structural work on the property.

Why this is not a garden wall

A driveway wall carries surcharge. The weight of vehicles, and the weight of the pavement itself, sit on the ground behind or above the wall and add to what it has to resist. A wall specified for a garden bank of the same height is materially under-designed for the same height of driveway, and the difference is not marginal.

That is why a low driveway wall often needs engineering when a much taller garden wall would not. The height threshold in the regulations is not the only trigger; load behind the wall is the other, and a driveway is a textbook surcharge.

Dynamic load matters too. A parked car is a static load; a vehicle braking or turning applies force in directions a static calculation does not cover, and delivery or service vehicles are heavier than the family car everybody thinks about.

Two walls, not one

Most driveway cuts need retaining on both sides of the problem, and people usually only budget for one.

Below the driveway, on the downhill side, a wall holds the fill supporting the pavement edge. If that fails, the driveway loses its support and the edge drops away.

Above the driveway, on the uphill side, the cut face has to be held or battered back. A vertical cut into a slope is stable in dry ground and is not stable after weeks of rain, and material coming down onto a driveway is both a hazard and a recurring cost.

Which of these you need depends on the geometry, and it is one of the first things worth establishing.

Water off a sealed surface

A driveway is impermeable, which means all the rain landing on it runs off rather than soaking in, and it concentrates that runoff at the edges. Any wall alongside a driveway is therefore dealing with more water than the same wall in a garden.

The drainage has to account for that: subsoil drainage behind the wall as always, plus surface drainage that catches the runoff before it reaches the wall or the cut face. Getting the second part wrong undoes the first.

Access during the work

The practical constraint on a steep block is that the driveway being rebuilt is usually also the only way onto the property, including for the plant doing the work. Sequencing that so a household is not landlocked is part of the planning, and where it genuinely cannot be avoided you will be told before the job starts rather than during it.

Quotes
Measured on the block, given in writing, no obligation
  • We stand on the block before anybody talks about a number, because a slope cannot be priced from a description
  • The quote states the height, the material, the footing, the drainage and where the spoil goes
  • If engineering or approval is needed it is priced in, not added once the machine is already on site
