What a Retaining Wall Actually Costs to Build

Height matters more than length, access matters more than either, and the cheapest quote is usually missing the drainage.

Retaining wall quotes vary more than almost any other trade quote a homeowner will collect, and the spread is genuinely confusing when the wall being described sounds like the same wall. Here is what the number is actually made of.

Height drives cost far harder than length

The instinct is to think in metres of wall. It is the wrong unit.

As a wall gets taller the load on it increases disproportionately, because the pressure grows with depth and it acts over a greater area. Doubling the height of a wall much more than doubles what it has to resist. That flows straight into cost: bigger posts or thicker blocks, closer post spacing, deeper and wider footings, more excavation, and above a certain point engineering and approval.

The practical consequence is that a long low wall is usually far cheaper than a short tall one, and that terracing a slope into two walls can genuinely cost less than building one wall of the combined height. If your budget is fixed, the height is the variable worth discussing first.

Access decides more prices than anything else

This is the factor people never anticipate and it can move a quote enormously.

A wall a machine can drive to is one job. A wall reached through a 900mm side gate, past a house, around a pool, is a completely different one. Material has to be carried, spoil has to be barrowed out, and work that an excavator would do in a day takes several by hand.

Concrete sleepers are heavy, which is exactly why they last, and on a no-access site that weight becomes the constraint. Steep driveways, overhead powerlines, soft ground a machine would sink into and neighbouring structures too close to work beside all count here.

If you want a useful quote, send a photo of how somebody would get to the wall.

Excavation and disposal

Cutting into a bank produces spoil, and spoil has to go somewhere. On a site where it can be spread or used as fill elsewhere on the property, that cost largely disappears. On a suburban block it goes into a truck and to a disposal facility, and both the truck and the tipping are real costs.

What comes out of the ground matters too. Ordinary soil digs quickly; rock does not, and hitting rock partway along a footing line changes the job. Ground with a high water table needs dewatering.

Drainage, which is where the cheap quote saves

Drainage is a genuine line item: the drain, the aggregate, the geotextile, and the outlet works to take the water somewhere legal.

It is also completely invisible once backfilled, which makes it the easiest thing to leave out. When you have three quotes and one is well below the others, the difference is very often the drainage layer plus a lighter footing schedule. You are not comparing the same wall.

Ask each quote to state what goes behind the wall. It is the fastest way to find out what you are actually being offered.

Engineering and approval

Where the height or the load requires it, engineering design, certification and the approval process are real costs. They should be in the quote as identified items rather than appearing later.

We do not publish prices, because any figure here would be a figure for somebody else’s slope. See concrete sleeper walls for what the common build actually involves, or call 0468 066 055.

More before you start

Ask us about your slope

Where a drainage retrofit fixes what another quote wanted to demolish, or where the lean you are worried about has been sitting there for a decade and is going nowhere, we would rather say so than sell you a wall.

Quotes
Measured on the block, given in writing, no obligation
  • We stand on the block before anybody talks about a number, because a slope cannot be priced from a description
  • The quote states the height, the material, the footing, the drainage and where the spoil goes
  • If engineering or approval is needed it is priced in, not added once the machine is already on site
